Time to Increase Your Vitamin D

Vitamin D. Are you low and don’t know it? It may be time to increase your levels.

Winter is upon us here in the U.S. (and many parts of the world) and one of the things I think a lot of people often overlook (or at least Jess and I do) is our Vitamin D intake and levels.

Here in Spokane WA we average only 171 days of sun shine (U.S. avg is 205) and get 48” of snow (U.S. avg is 24) so there is plenty of time spend away from the natural generator…the beautiful sun.

The reason I am writing this is because Jess just got her blood test back and her D level is a way low, and it reminded me of how mine was two years ago which was even lower than hers. I figured if ours is low, yours might be as well.

Symptoms of low levels

According to Live Well with UnityPoint Health, the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are often very subtle; ultimately, leaving many people deficient and not even knowing it. However, below are some of the effects/indicators of low levels:

Fatigue or tiredness

Bone pain

Joint pain

Muscle pain

Sour mood

Low energy

More frequent illness

Anxiety

Irritability

Weight gain

Hair loss

Cognitive impairments in older adults (WebMD)

How to get Vitamin D

There are many ways to get vitamin D including from direct sunlight, however, many won’t get enough, especially in the winter months with cold weather and limited availability. You can also get it from eating food, mostly fish, but even then you may not get enough of it…or eat so much of if, and so often that you get sick of it and don’t eat it again. Another way to supplement your vitamin D is to take a multivitamin pill everyday which is what I do, or a larger dosage pill that you can get prescribed by your doctor and take it once a week, which is what Jess does.

According to Harvard Medical School “Most people require supplements to get the vitamin D they need. It’s the main benefit of a daily multivitamin; most provide 400 IU. Remember to read the labels carefully so you won’t get too little or too much. And although cod liver oil is rich in vitamin D, it has too much vitamin A for regular use.” To learn how Vitamin D works in the body (very helpful) check out the Harvard Medical School website here.

So while nothing earth shattering in this blog, my intent is to remind you to monitor your vitamin level and if you need to get checked, do so today!
