Struggling with Your Mental Health?

Is depression or anxiety (or any other mental health diagnosis) whipping your ass day-in-day-out and you can’t find the motivation you used to have to be productive? Feel like sleeping all day, or not even getting out of bed?

That is okay you aren’t alone. There are millions of people just like you. Some better off, some the same, some way worse. I don’t know your situation, or the entire surroundings of how you feel, but can tell you that I live with major depression and have for the past 15 years or so. I know your feelings.

With that said, have you ever heard the term “put your boots on and cowboy/cowgirl up”. Have you ever wondered what the hell people are even talking about?

Cowboy’s and Cowgirl’s are some tough ass people. They have both a physically and mentally demanding career. Early mornings, long hard days, cold, hot, rain, snow it doesn’t matter they have a job to do, and they manage to get it done. If not, the farm fails or animals die.

Cowboy’s/girls don’t need a big boost of motivation to get out and do it. They just get up and do it. I would bet those that have done it for a long time actually dread the morning alarm that goes off in the dark, when it is cold and snowing outside.

I am sure there are plenty of days they just want to lay in bed, relax on the couch, have a cup or 5 of coffee, or simply say I don’t have the motivation to do it, I will get to it later or tomorrow.

Motivation comes and goes and if you are waiting on it, you better catch it while it lasts. But what happens when it doesn’t show up, or it takes several days to reach you?

This is where the phrase “cowboy up” comes from.

You don’t need motivation to do the hard shit, or any shit for that matter. You must simply just do the hard shit.

I have found living with depression that I don’t really get a lot of motivation in life. Therefore, I have to rely on just simply doing what needs to be done, whether I like it or not. Ultimately, most days I get up, put my “boots on and cowboy up”.

By doing this, you will gain a lot of mental toughness and resiliency. By forcing yourself out of bed to do even just the smallest of things give you a sense of accomplishment. It helps build momentum, and if it doesn’t, it at least gets you moving and engaged.

If you do this enough times in a row you will start to build a pattern. This pattern will help you break the current cycle of depression that wants to hold you down. Note, I didn’t say will make it go away, but will allow you to say “fine fuck it I will just get up and do it”. Plus, this helps to relieve the stress of having things pile up that need to get done. Even if it is just putting the laundry in and washing the dishes and taking a break can get you in motion.

So for those feeling like life is whipping your ass right now are are struggling with your mental health (or for the past year, two, ten) in life I stand beside you in your struggle. While I can’t help carry your load, I can tell you that I am here for you and I believe in you.

Do you struggle with mental health issues and haven’t sought treatment? Now is a great time to take the first step and call a therapist/counselor/church and ask for help. There is no shame or weakness in asking for help. I can tell you that asking for help is one of the most courageous and strongest things you can do. Trust me, I know!

So why don’t you join me and we can put just our boots and cowboy hats on and get through this together.

I found a good article on irishnaturism.org that addresses naturism and mental health (which I always find my mental health better when I am nude). Check out the article here.

I am not saying that vitamin D will solve the world (that is up to discussions with your medical provider) but here is a recent post I did on vitamin D deficiency since most of us are in winter and don’t have a lot of sunlight. Check it out here.

While you may feel like you are struggling with your mental health alone, you are not. There are resources and people that care about you and want ou to succeed in life. You just have to reach out and find the right person.
