Nudist Safety Tip: Situational Awareness

Not only am I a nudist, I also happen to be a Marine Corps veteran, Marine Corps Martial Arts/Close Combat Instructor, taught unarmed self-defense, spent over 9 years in the Anti-Terrorism community, and owned a business teaching self-defense, workplace violence and active shooter response. With all of this experience and knowledge I felt it is vital to share it in a new Nudist Safety Tip Series.

This series will be crafted to provide information that will not only help you in a nudist environment, but your everyday life (especially with the instability of many cities throughout the U.S. and across the globe). Whether in Spokane Washington or Los Angeles California, it is important to have a sold foundation of safety. I would encourage both men and women to read this, and most importantly teenagers so they can establish a solid foundation early.

Violence can occur to anyone at anytime. You are not immune, I am not immune.  Whether at a store or a nudist resort, violence can occur with little to no warning.

However, apply some of these tips and you will enhance your readiness to observe and act.

While I would love to say all nudist are cool and you have nothing to worry about, nudist are humans.   While rare, events of sexual assault have happened to nudist, and like most sexual assaults, in order to be successful they must either remove your clothes or penetrate you through them; ultimately, as a nudist you remove the barrier of protection.

Now don’t be alarmed, freaked out, or become paranoid. Definitely, don’t shy away from trying it! However, just understand that some situations are more dangerous than others, so know where you are going and the crime that happens around you. If you are traveling to a new area make sure to do some research before you go.

Now on to what you have all been waiting for. The first installment of this nudist safety blog will focus on situational awareness.

Situational awareness is nothing more than knowing what is going on around you, and within you.

 Going on around you:

                – Are you in a public area with a lot of people around?

                – What is the lighting like?

                – Are there people (majority men) staring a little too much at you?

                – Are they publicly masturbating (either fast or slowly)?

                – When you go to the restroom, are you secluded from others, are there men just hanging around outside?

                – Are you alone or in the company of others?

                – Are you in an area that is familiar to you, or a brand new area (including locations and languages)?

                –  Do you see a person, or group of people, and they make you nervous or think “they look like they are up to no good?”

   Going on inside of you:

                – How are you feeling that day (emotionally/physically)?

                – Is your mind preoccupied where you don’t/won’t see pre-attack indicators or warning signs?

                – Are you feeling confident or hesitant and shy (body language is powerful)?

                – Are you preoccupied with your phone, or have ear buds in and occupying your brains awareness?

– Are you sober or are you drinking, snorting or smoking something that will cloud your memory and judgement?

Possessing situational awareness doesn’t mean living paranoid that someone is going to attack you, it is merely just knowing what is going on.

How to increase your awareness

The easiest way to increase your awareness is to:

– Simply look up and look around. If you are constantly looking down at your phone, book, or the ground you will miss what is happening around you. Also, take your ear buds out, or at least leave one ear open. This will allow you to hear what is going on.

One of the biggest benefits to me of being a nudist is allowing myself to let go and unwind; however, even as a male I still maintain situational awareness. I do this not only for my safety, but for the safety of those around me.

As you can see from my background it is hard for me to let my guard down and truly relax. I am able to do so because I maintain my situational awareness in a general sense which allows me to have fun, yet know what is going on around me.

Whether clothed or naked, use these tips to increase your awareness. Pay attention to what is happening around you, but also how you are feeling on the inside. This is the foundation of safety.

In this Nudist Safety Tip: Situational Awareness blog we will build off of a good solid foundation which begins with being aware.

Next up we will cover instinct and intuition….what it is, and why it is important to listen to it.

Until then, start to work on your awareness.

In your corner,

Ryan
